Insurance and Payments

Our practice accepts most major medical health insurance plans and vision benefits.

smarteyes! accepts payments from private insurance plans as well as BC’s Medical Service Plan to help our patient’s cover as much of their eye exam and glasses as possible. We can direct-bill most private insurances right in our office, saving you time and money!

Private Insurance

These plans often come from an employer or an insurance plan that is paid into privately. Coverage varies from partial to full exam coverage, as well as an allowance towards glasses or contacts.

Medical Service Plan

This is insurance offered to all BC residents. It covers the whole exam for anyone under 19, and a portion of the eye exam for anyone over 65, or when an eligible condition is present. Common conditions that meet this criteria are diabetes, macular degeneration, and glaucoma, but many more exist and will be determined and applied by your doctor.

Before your visit, it’s helpful to bring your insurance card or benefit booklet so we can check your coverage ahead of time. If this is your first time using your plan with us, try to have details like your claim limits, coverage frequency (how often you’re eligible for an exam or new glasses), and any copays or deductibles. For MSP coverage related to medical conditions, we may ask a few questions or request supporting documents.

If your glasses or contact lenses are only partially covered, we’ll clearly explain what’s included and what portion you’ll need to pay.
